What is Male Menopause – Symptoms and Research Facts

Lowering of testosterone levels can lead to the onset of men menopause as well. Only two percent males are presently found to be affected by this condition. The research was carried out by researchers from the University of Manchester and results of the study were published in the June 2010 issue of the England Journal of Medicine.

Symptoms of Male Menopause:

  • Fatigue

  • Hair loss
  • Weight loss
  • Obesity / overweight
  • Decrease in concentration
  • Inability to lift heavy objects or carry out other vigorous activities like running
  • Inability to walk more than 1 km
  • Lowered frequency of erection in the morning
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Changes in sleep pattern
  • Low self esteem
  • Anxiety
  • Nervousness
  • Inability to get up from the chair

According to experts from the Northwestern Medical Hospital, 95 percent of menopause cases in men are ignored and do not receive treatment on right time. The signs start becoming apparent when the testicles do not produce enough testosterone hormone. This chemical is a key signaling molecule of the male body. A drop in its levels causes severe physical and mental changes as mentioned above.

Research Facts on Male Menopause:

  • It is not easy to properly diagnose the signs of menopause in men especially if it is in the last stage, as the list of non specific signs is quite long.
  • There has been 400 percent rise in testosterone treatment in the United States since 1999.
  • But, experts are of the opinion that this treatment is useful in certain cases only where there is deficiency of androgen hormone.
  • Some of the side effects of this treatment are urinary tract blockage, breast development, risk of prostate cancer, heart ailments, sleep apnea and epilepsy.


Though there are specific evidences of this rare condition in men, experts are of the opinion that the available treatment for it should be given after observing discretion.
