Benefits of Pomegranate Juice in Inhibiting Prostate Cancer Metastasis in Men

Prostate cancer is the second most leading cause of death in men, especially above 50 years, in the United States. It has no cure. Though standard cancer treatment techniques can curb the ailment, it has the ability to recur. Taking benefits of pomegranate juice to the next level, researchers at the University of California, Riverside, found certain compounds which have the ability to naturally inhibit and weaken the process of metastasis of this cancer.

The results of the study were presented at the 50th American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting, in Philadelphia, December 2010.

Benefits of Pomegranate Juice in Preventing Prostate Cancer Metastasis:

  • Metastasis is the process in which cancer cells enter into the blood stream from their primary tumor site and move to fresh and remote corners of the body to spread cancer.
  • If this process is inhibited, the cancer ailment can be cured. Diagnosis of the disease after this stage can only allow treatment and management.
  • Generally, the malignant prostate cancer cells are well inhibited from their harmful activities by the suppression of male hormone testosterone.
  • This vital male signaling molecule is required by the cancer cells of the prostate for their growth.
  • But, these rogue cells are adept at discovering new mechanisms of survival in fast changing environments.
  • They find out ways of remaining unharmed from the suppression therapy by becoming resistant to it turning more aggressive.
  • When these malignant cells learn to be testosterone resistant, they also acquire the ability to spread more quickly in the body to sites like lymph nodes, lungs and bone marrow proving such a development fatal for the patient’s existence.
  • The researchers applied juice of pomegranate on the cells which became resistant to testosterone and had higher chances of metastasizing.
  • It was found that these cells did not divide as rapidly as they did earlier and moved to the fresh locations at a slower rate too.
    • Four compounds in the juice, identified as conjugated fatty acids, hydrobenzoic acids, phenyipropanoids and flavones were responsible for the observed positive developments in metastasis.

Though benefits of pomegranate juice in stopping prostate cancer metastasis have been discovered in the study, the side effects are yet to be learned as part of the further research.
