How Ayurveda Aids in Overcoming Anxiety?

Ayurveda believes that every individual has own sets of fear and desires which lead to anxiety. In order to curb this unwanted mental state, it tries to make the patient recognize it, make it clear that the thoughts are unreal and finally help in moving ahead of it.

Some times, channelizing the vital force of life into unnatural activities can also lead to unmada. The treatment of anxiety as mentioned in ayurveda is through Oleation therapy. It is followed by Sweat therapy.

Oleation Therapy:

This treatment modality has two parts, namely the external and internal oleation. The former involves messages given by therapists or self for 15-60 minutes on daily basis. The oils recommended for this purpose are Mahanarayana oil, bala oil and Dhanyantram oil.

Taking the prakriti (body type) and ama (its presence or absence) into consideration, patients suffering from anxiety can be prescribed animal fats, cow’s ghee or sesame oil for four to seven days for carrying out internal oleation.

Sweat Therapy:

Taking hot water bottles, steam baths, mustard plasters, exposure to fire of sun bathing for 15-20 minutes are the ways of this therapy. Some herbs used in the bath which cause the therapeutic effects are:

  • Kakamachi ( Solanum nigrum)
  • Tejpatra (Cinnamomum tamala)
  • Madana (Randia Dumentorium)
  • Jayaphala (Myristica fragrans)
  • Punarnava (Boerhaayia Diffusa)

While oleation therapy helps in overcoming anxiety by separating the imbalances from the nerves, sweating therapy liquefies them aiding their easy excretion from the body.
