What is Fitness?

What defines fitness? Is it being “bulky” in muscle tone? Or not having a pot belly? Or having a “stick thin” figure? Fitness in men, generally, is defined as having a normal body weight and ability to perform daily activities without too much stress on the body. There are a lot of parameters in assessing fitness level in men.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

One of the most common fitness parameters is Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is a parameter which assesses fat content in the body. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), normal BMI is in the range of 18.5 -24.99. Meanwhile BMI between 25 and 29.99 is categorized as overweight. And BMI of more than 30 is categorized as obese. An overweight or obese individual would face the risk of cardiovascular diseases. You could calculate your own BMI by dividing your weight (in kilograms) with your height square (in meter2).

Fitness Activities

There are a lot of activities which can help you achieving an ideal BMI. Different types of activities cater to different age groups. Younger men may opt for more aggressive and high intensity activities such as weight-lifting, push-ups, track cycling and marathon. High intensity activities will boost your metabolism level, which in turn burns up more calories in your body.

Alternative Exercises

On the other hand, elderly men should focus on strengthening their muscles. Strong muscles could help the elderly in carrying out daily activities without facing avoidable injuries such as falls, fractures and straining of tissues. To start with, you may opt for low impact exercises such as swimming and brisk walking. An average of twenty minutes exercise, two to three times a week could help a lot in keeping your body fit. Balancing exercises such as yoga and tai chi are also great options to help you control your body movement. If you suffer from any medical condition, always consult your physician to choose the best exercise that suits you.

Once you have found the type of exercise that is right for you, keep yourself going with it. The key to achieve a good fitness level is by exercising regularly and having an ideal BMI.
